Glossary PRECIOSA has assembled a glossary of terms relevant to the project objectives. They are presented here in two sections:

- Consisting of the design of cryptographic primitives (such as block ciphers and hash functions) and application-specific algorithms used at the protocol level.
- Architecture level
- Consisting of secure hardware/software partitioning, execution platform features and architecture tactics to prevent, tolerate or remove faults.
- Automatic emergency call

B C - Collision avoidance
- Automatic control of vehicle movements based on detection of potential obstacles in relation to the predicted trajectory of the vehicle.[1]
- Congestion warning
- Warning of detected or predicted congestion on a certain part of the road network.[1]
- Co-operative systems
- Co-operative systems are Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) based on vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communications to improve efficiency of the transport systems and in the safety of all road users.[2]

D - Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC)
- A short to medium range communications service that supports both Public Safety and Private operations in roadside to vehicle and vehicle to vehicle communication environments.[4]
- Driver profiling
- Observation, recording and analysis of the characteristics of the behavior of a driver during a certain time period.[1]
E - eCall
- An emergency call either generated manually by vehicle occupants or automatically via activation of in-vehicle sensors when an accident occurs.[5]
- Electronic license plate
- An electronic vehicle identity, that can be accessed from outside a moving vehicle.[1]
- Electronic number plate

- Electronic toll collection (ETC)
- Toll collection by electronic means, e.g. based on smart cards or electronic tags. [1]
- e-ticketing
- The activities of issuing and delivering payment means and related electronic payment mediums and the collection of related fees. [1]
- Enhanced floating car data (EFCD)
- High-quality traffic and safety information services based on floating car data.[6]
F - Fleet management
- Planning, monitoring, controlling and evaluating operations of a vehicle fleet, including the drivers. [1]
- Floating car data (FCD)
- Information about current traffic situation from vehicles that serve as mobile data collection devices.[7]
- Functional architecture
- A description of the logical structure of the subfunctions of a system and the information exchange between them.[1]
G H - Hazard warning
- Warning to drivers of a detected or predicted hazard on a certain part of the road network.[1]
I - Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)
- The integration of information and communications technology with transport infrastructure, vehicles and users.[8]

J K L - Lane change assistance
- Guidance to a driver in order to perform safe lane changing.[1]
- Lane departure warning

- Logical architecture

M - Map updating
- Provision of new or revised information to a digital road map.[1]
- Merge collision warning

- Mobility management
- Management of transport demand and traffic flows (people, vehicles and goods) either by information, education and motivation of transport customers, by laws, taxation, enforcement, physical planning or by traffic management.[1]
- Multimodal transport
- Transport of people or goods by more than one mode of transport during a single journey.[1]
N - Navigation
- Positioning and determination of the direction to follow to a given destination. [1]
O - On-board unit (OBU)
- ??Equipment inside the vehicle or attached to it.[1]
- OD estimation

- Operator
- An organization responsible for operating a system.[1]
- Origin-destination estimation
- Estimation of the number of vehicle or person trips between zones.[1]
P - Platooning
- Vehicles traveling together as a group, either voluntarily or involuntarily.[1]
- Positioning
- Determination of the geographical position of something. [1]
- Probe vehicle data

Q - Queue warning
- Warning of a detected or predicted queue on a certain road section.[1]
R - Road-side unit (RSU)
- A wireless access point placed next to a street that is capable of communicating with vehicles.
- Road surface monitoring
- Data collection and status assessment of the current road surface conditions such as friction and roughness.[1]
- Route computation
- Calculation of relevant routes based on certain criteria.[1]
S - Service provider
- Entity providing a service.
- Session
- The complete interaction between two communication devices.
- Subscriber
- A person or an organization having entered a contract with a service provider.
- System architecture
- A set of concepts and rules describing the inter-relationship between entities in the entire system, independent of the hardware and software environment.[1]
- System specification
- A detailed functional and technical description of a system.[1]
T - Traffic Message Channel (TMC)
- Digital channel used to provide silent, coded messages to in-vehicle applications in order to display route and traffic information in a user's native language.[8]
- Traffic Management Center (TMC)

- Traffic Operations Center (TOC)

- Transportation Management Center (TMC)
- An organization owned or operated by a single agency or multiple transportation agencies and perform an array of functions including data acquisition, command and control, computing, and communications for many types of ITS applications.[9]
U - User
- A person or an organization using transport or transport related services.[1]
V - V2X
- Vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-anything communications.
- Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications
- The communications among vehicles.
- Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications
- The communications between a vehicle and a road-side unit.
- V2X reference architecture
- A description of V2X communication-based ITS architecture for the designing and development purpose. The architecture divides ITS into three domains: vehicle domain, access domain, and back-end domain.
